There is no “I” in “Team”. This oft used sports cliché played out in the courtroom as a deep Smith Haughey medical malpractice defense team, led by shareholder Jason Sebolt, obtained a jury defense verdict of no liability for its West Michigan hospital and electrophysiologist (a cardiac specialty) clients. The case involved care to a patient with a very rare genetic heart condition that led to the patient’s sudden and unfortunate cardiac episode leading to the patient’s death. After a two-week trial on the plaintiff’s nearly $3 million demand, the jury reached its verdict after only a few hours of deliberations, determining that the hospital and the doctor met the standard of care in monitoring and treating the patient while circumstances outside of the defendants’ control led to the patient’s passing.
The trial team bench ran deep on this case.
