Smith Haughey attorneys Tom McCarthy and Jack Oostema recently achieved a significant victory by way of a jury verdict in Ionia County Circuit Court of more than $4.6 million for our client, a young woman who suffered catastrophic orthopedic injuries over six years ago, when her vehicle was hit head on by a car that crossed the centerline on a 55 mph, two lane county road.
During the years leading up to the jury trial, Tom and Jack challenged the defendant’s key defenses by bringing a series of motions seeking dismissal of the defenses, which motions were granted by the trial judge resulting in the defenses being dismissed. After a five day jury trial, during which the jury was presented with substantial medical evidence of how our client’s life was permanently changed by her injuries, the jury returned its sizable verdict on December 17, 2021.
