Smith Haughey Announces New Shareholders and Board of Directors

Grand Rapids, Mich., Jan. 11, 2018 — Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge is pleased to announce the addition of two new shareholders and its 2018 Board of Directors.

Shareholders

  • Charissa C. Huang is an attorney in Smith Haughey’s Grand Rapids office. She concentrates her litigation practices in the area of personal injury and wrongful death, working to secure life changing compensation for individuals who have suffered catastrophic injuries and families who have lost loved ones due to wrongful conduct of others. Her experience in this regard includes vehicular accidents, premises liability and product liability cases.
  • Christopher M. Spain also practices in Smith Haughey’s Grand Rapids office. He is a member of the firm’s litigation practice group, where he represent an array of individuals and organizations in the resolution of various disputes. Chris also practices in the area of medical malpractice defense, where he assists his clients by analyzing complicated medical causation issues, addressing the admissibility of expert evidence, preparing motions for summary disposition, and preparing cases for trial or effective settlement negotiations.

Board of Directors

Smith Haughey’s 2018 Board of Directors will include attorneys Cheryl L. Chandler (Treasurer), Kevin B. Even, William W. Jack Jr. (Chief Executive Officer), E. Thomas McCarthy, Jr., John (Jack) L. Oostema, Jason R. Sebolt, and Matthew L. Wikander (Secretary).

Additional Appointments

  • In addition to the firm’s new shareholders and Board of Directors, attorney Jason R. Sebolt has been named chair of the firm’s medical malpractice practice group. Jason is a medical malpractice defense attorney in the firm’s Grand Rapids office. He counsels hospitals and health care providers in the areas of medical malpractice defense, general liability, premises liability, and risk management. He is also the past president of the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management.
  • Jaron J. Nyhof has been named chair of the firm’s business and real estate practice group. Jaron is a shareholder in Smith Haughey’s Holland office, practicing in the areas of business, securities, and real estate law. He specializes in for profit and nonprofit entity formation, planning, governance, purchases and sales; nonprofit securities offerings; commercial contracts, transactions, and lending; private equity investments; and real estate purchases, sales, leasing and development.
  • Kristen E. Guinn has been named the firm’s interim president through the end of the year. Kristen is a trial attorney who represents individuals and organizations in a variety of disputes, including professional malpractice, contract, employment, and general liability claims. Kristen also serves as chair of Smith Haughey’s associate development committee.
